"The Quiet" JOURNEY of NANO-ENTREPRENEURS

WE NEED TO VALIDATE THE IMPORTANCE OF NANO-ENTREPRENEURS IN THE ECONOMY

THIS ARTICLE PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE RELEVANCE OF

THE SMALL  PLAYERS IN BUSINESS

With the recent statement of GO NEGOSYO highlighting the importance of nano-entrepreneurs as an important backbone of the economy,  as they contribute to the total numbers of MSMEs which are pegged at 99 percent*  of the total businesses in the Philippines, nano-entrepreneurs can finally find an ally, in GO NEGOSYO, even as small players in the highly-competitive world of business.

GETTING TO KNOW THE NANO-ENTREPRENEURS

NANO-ENTREPRENEURS are enterprising individuals who often, do not have enough capital to be considered micro-entrepreneurs, yet are aggressive enough to pursue entrepreneurship with their fresh brand of creativity and sharp business skills, that make them thrive and survive even the harshest realities of business.

Nano-entrepreneurs could be anyone you see on the streets, online, subscribing to e-commerce apps, or individuals who are into direct selling of products making offers,  to benefit a sale or promote their current products in tow.

THEY DO NOT LACK IDEAS TO WORK ON IN BUSINESS. What they lack is a never-ending capital that corporations and micro and middle-sized businesses can often brag about.

Without prodding, or enough encouragement from the people around them, nano-entrepreneurs work their way THROUGH AND AROUND a grid of bureaucracy, challenges, and expectations that only the strongest can hurdle.

A lot of nano-entrepreneurs are stay-at-home moms or dads; of late because of the pandemic, they took the option of sourcing for economic opportunities that they have lacked because of the inconvenient times and non-availability of work in their industries.

Some nano-entrepreneurs do not have the liberty of time, like those who pursue work with a nine-to-five timecard style.  Some are pressed down by house obligations and parental duties.  Even if they pursue entrepreneurship in a different business model and structure, they are not under-educated. In fact, a lot of nano-entrepreneurs one can bump into, if you go out on the field are professionals, bent on finding an extra hustle, a side gig, to make ends meet.

The hardships faced by entrepreneurs are often left unheard or “un-responded to” by proper government agencies. They are treated coldly when trying to reach out for permits. Even formal banking institutions add to their burdens by asking for papers and documents that nano-entrepreneurs are not given, due to the informality of their entrepreneurship and business model.

With GO NEGOSYO as an institution that tries to bring stakeholders in business together, finally hinting at the importance of nano-entrepreneurs or those “one-man show businesses” and the role nano-entrepreneurs play in the economy, ordinary moms and dads eyeing better prospects in business hopefully would get better respect and treatment from the sectors and agencies who can make their lives and economic future, ultimately-- better.

Note: In paragraph 1 of this article, the numbers mentioned is in (*) is based on a press release issued by Go Negosyo, dated May 15, 2023, entitled:  “Why Nano Businesses Are Our Business,”. Retrieved online, May 22, 2023.
